The time spent on your matter gets billed to you at an hourly rate of $280 (plus HST). The amount of time needed always depends upon how many issues there are and how simple or complex the facts are. To open a file for a separation agreement, a retainer of 10 hours is paid on deposit ($280 x 10 + HST) = $3164. This is known as a retainer.
HOW RETAINERS WORK:
A retainer is a sum of money placed on deposit. Work cannot proceed on a client's file unless there are funds on deposit, which usually have to be periodically refreshed with a new deposit.
If the client has a retainer of $2500 in trust and our invoice for one month of work is for $2800, we pay for the first $2,500 out of your retainer held in trust, and then we invoice you for the balance of $300. In addition, our invoice would indicate that the client needs to replenish their retainer. So the client needs to pay an additional $2500, or a total of $2800.
If the client has a retainer of $2500 in trust and our invoice to the client one month is for $1500, we will pay the $1500 out of the retainer and invoice the client. The invoice would show that the client has $1000 remaining in trust and also needs to replenish their retainer. So the client needs to pay $1500 to restore the retainer to $2500.
